|The Zuiderzee Museum is opening the winter season with The Legacy of Hotel Spaander. In the late 19th century Volendam was one of the biggest artists’ villages in Europe. The marketing abilities of the visionary Spaander family turned their traditional brown café into a lively artists’ hotel: Volendam became a symbol of Holland. The café is still worth a visit: nothing has changed over the last century. The wood is overpainted with a wood pattern, and the walls are stacked with paintings.
