|In a series of heroically difficult experiments in neuroscience, the basic anatomy of the neuron and its part in the nervous system were discovered via the Golgi stain. These old drawings show the basic components of a neuron: a dense arborization of ‘dendrites’ captures incoming information; these all flow into an oval ‘soma’, which in turn sends out a thin ‘axon’ that broadcasts the neuron’s messages to others.
