|May 20, 2011 opens the first major museum exhibition to survey the highly productive relationship of painting to photography in the American 20th-century. The photograph’s role in modern art goes far beyond reproduction: the way the lens freezes, flattens and crops the world conditions all visual representations. The exhibition will pair paintings and photographs with an intrinsic visual relationship. The artist is a picture maker, whatever the means. Art L Georgia O’Keeffe. Photo R Alfred Stieglitz
